What is Asbestos:
Many people have heard of asbestos, but not everyone knows exactly what it is. In simple terms, asbestos is a group of six natural minerals made of tiny fibers. The most common types are chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite.
Asbestos fibers are small but very strong. They were widely used in construction and manufacturing during the 1900s because they were cheap and very durable. Since asbestos is also highly resistant to heat, it was often woven into fabrics and used in fireproofing and insulation materials.
However, in the 1970s, the use of asbestos dropped sharply when people realized it could be harmful to human health.
Asbestos can come in two forms: friable or non-friable. Friable asbestos is loose and easily crumbles into dust, while non-friable asbestos is more solid.
Asbestos exposure carries a number of health risks. For instance, breathing in asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. The risk of contracting these diseases increases with the number of fibres inhaled. The greater the exposure, the greater the chance of developing an asbestos-related illness.
